Is lawn thatch a marketing tool?

Friendly backyard debate between my Dad and I.

I just mow my lawn. I never bag the clippings. I believe that the lawn clippings improve the soil and help it to retain moisture.

My Dad is old school. Bag the clippings, heavy fertilizer. His lawn is his obsession.

It bugs him when I say thatch is a myth created to sell more stuff. What do you think?
